Ice machine, sinks linked to Legionnaires’ cases at University of Washington Medical Center

An ice machine and two sinks in cardiac units of the hospital’s Cascade Tower were found to be contaminated with the germs that can cause the potentially deadly form of pneumonia.

Second death linked to Legionnaires’ at center.

A second death of a University of Washington Medical Center patient has been linked to Legionnaires’ disease.

King County Public Health said Sept. 14 that the patient had pneumonia and that Legionnaires’ disease may have been a contributing factor. That brings to three the number of patients with the disease.

The patient died Aug. 27 in the hospital's cardiac-care unit The exact cause of death hasn't been determined, though the Legionnaires’ disease was discovered at an autopsy.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the disease has begun to focus on the water supply.
