Kansas county approves second plumbing code despite plumbers' safety concerns

Officials in Sedgwick County voted 4-1 to approve a new dual code system, which means two plumbing codes – the Uniform Plumbing Code or the International Plumbing Code – can now be used for new construction in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Dozens of plumbing professionals spoke on the issue for more than three hours prior to the Oct. 5 vote, saying the new code threatens public health and safety. But those in favor of the new code say the update is long overdue and could save consumers money.

Many plumbing professionals opposed to the change argued that adding a certain vent could let harmful chemicals into your home.
